Indole-3-carbinol is a natural constituent of vegetables of the Brassica family (such as cauliflower and broccoli). Indole-3-carbinol induces cytochrome p450 enzymes related to estrogen metabolism, resulting in the increased 2-hydroxylation of estrogens and a concomitant increase in the 2-hydroxy:16-hydroxy estrogen ratio.
